The Brief
Amfar approached Gavin Schneider Productions to produce one of the images in a series of portraits featuring the world’s most influential people, aimed at raising funds for AIDS relief. The portrait focused on Nelson Mandela, the renowned anti-apartheid activist and former President of South Africa. We were privileged to be selected as the production company entrusted with overseeing the shoot.
The Solution
Renowned photographer Mark Seliger, widely regarded as the best of the best, captured the portrait of Mandela. The shoot took place in a makeshift studio in George, along the Cape’s Garden Route, during Mandela’s 46664 concert tour. Despite challenges, including Mandela’s illness and the potential last-minute cancellation, we were determined to succeed.
With meticulous planning and attention to detail, we set up everything for the shoot. When Mandela entered the room, his presence was unmistakable—luminous and awe-inspiring. Seliger skillfully captured this essence, creating a portrait that became a series highlight.
Our professionalism and adaptability were crucial in ensuring the shoot’s success, given Mandela’s condition. We remained prepared for any eventuality, overcoming obstacles to make the shoot possible. The Amfar Portrait Series was a success.
