The tablet was designed to be durable, user-friendly, reliable, and able to withstand an active lifestyle. It was also intended to be waterproof, dirt-proof, and difficult to break.

The Brief

The goal of the Samsung Advertising Campaign was to convey the tablet’s durability and versatility in various challenging scenarios. The production team was tasked with capturing footage that would suggest the tablet’s ability to endure extreme conditions while remaining functional. The brief emphasized the tablet’s user-friendly features, highlighting that even a child could easily operate it. Additionally, the campaign aimed to establish trust by showcasing the tablet’s reliability in preserving precious family memories and milestones.

The Solution

To meet the objectives of the brief, Gavin Schneider Productions took on an ambitious approach. They strategically planned indoor and outdoor shoots, ensuring a wide range of environments to demonstrate the tablet’s resilience. Locations included tree settings, forests, and nighttime scenes, all in Cape Town.

Cape Town’s abundant natural light, known for its brightness, warmth, and vivid colours, provided an ideal backdrop for natural-lit shots. However, creating rain during the South African summer proved challenging, as Cape Town typically experiences rainfall during winter. To overcome this obstacle, the production team called upon a special effects water truck equipped with a power hose and sprinkling system to simulate rain as needed.

In order to capture the tablet’s performance in low-light conditions, the team conducted night shoots. They carefully managed the lighting setup, ensuring the crew’s presence did not interfere with the beauty of the stars. This required them to work in the dark, relying on their expertise and experience to achieve the desired visual effects.

The true stars of the production were a local young girl, specifically cast for her natural charm and ability to handle each setup effortlessly. Her presence added authenticity and relatability to the campaign, showing that the tablet was suitable for people of all ages. The chosen location, a sprawling manor house nestled within its own private forest in Constantia, provided a picturesque and versatile setting that catered to various scenes. This one-stop production shop allowed for seamless coordination and minimized logistical challenges.
