GS Productions was approached by Sacoor Brothers, who had till that point shot their campaigns in Los Angeles. The client was testing the waters in Cape Town and wanted GPS to recommend a photographer. We had only one person in mind: Matthew Brookes. Brookes was raised in South Africa and Gavin knew him when he first started out in the early 90s; in fact, Gavin had once lent Brookes his cameras. There was a caveat: in the interim years Brookes had become one of the most sought-after celebrities and fashion photographers in the world. He agreed to do it. The 3-day shoot took place at a house in Constantia, which Brookes claimed had some of the best natural lighting with which he’d ever worked. The production was such a success that Sacoor Brothers returned to Cape Town – with Brookes – the following year.
